Untitled Short Story II

Kate stumbled over the scorched earth. Everything was desolate and dead, and she hoped she wouldn’t be part of that everything any time soon.

When all was eventually quiet, she collapsed onto the ashen ground. She hoped in vain for water or food; there was no sign of such things.  Looking around her, she could make out only a few burnt and ruined remains.  The charred binding of a book.  A broken doll.  A silver locket that no longer held a picture.

She sobbed in spite of it all.

———-

Kate did not know how much time passed, but she awoke to the sunset.  She squinted her eyes and stared at the sun.  The fire that symbolized the end of another day had lost its original beauty and charm. It now seemed to symbolize the end of everything.

Then she heard the helicopters overhead, and started running again.
